Yes. Truly light‑blocking parts can be achieved through a combination of material selection and design considerations.
Material choice
Several 3D‑printing materials provide excellent light‑blocking performance. Parts produced in the following materials will block light almost entirely when designed with a wall thickness of 2–3 mm:
- All FDM materials
- PA AF
- PA GF
- SLA Perform
Design considerations
For materials that are more translucent, such as PA 12, light blocking is still possible but requires significantly greater wall thickness, typically in the range of 4–6 mm. This is because light absorption increases exponentially with material thickness.
Additionally, the wavelength of the light plays an important role. Some materials may fully block certain wavelengths (for example, specific infrared wavelengths) while allowing others to pass through partially. If blocking a specific type or wavelength of light is critical for your application, additional testing or material evaluation is recommended.
